Golf Grip Tape – A Must For DIY Golf Grip Changes

Are your golf clubs in need of a change of grips? But are you unwilling to spend excessive amounts of money for grip retailers to change the grips for you? If so, then you can opt to change the golf grips yourself. All you need it golf grip tape and a few other materials in order to get started. Overall, the process shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes per club.

The first thing you should do is use a utility knife to remove the old grip from your club. You should ensure that none of the old solvent or tape that was used continues to stick to your club shaft. If these remain on your shaft, you will not be able to install your new golf grip properly. Likewise, you should also be careful not to cut or damage your club shaft in the process.

Once the shaft is completely clean you should fit your new grip onto the shaft. Push it all the way in, so you can mark the part of the shaft where the grip ends for easy reference later on. Upon ascertaining that the grip does fit, take it out then begin placing grip tape onto the shaft before the pencil marking.

In essence a grip tape is actually heavy-duty double sided tape. You can buy these from hardware stores and pro shops. They come in varying widths, so you should choose one you feel most comfortable with using. Whether you're using heavy duty types of grips like the Gold Pride grip, there's still a chance that this can break down. You need to wrap the tape in a spiral circular motion down your shaft while making sure the tape does not overlap.

This is why the wider tape is usually preferred by most golfers. What’s more you need to leave a certain amount of tape hanging out of the butt end of your shaft. This excess tape will be used to cover up the small opening of the shaft. If ever your golf grip was a bit loose during the earlier fitting you may want to double or triple wrap the shaft with the grip tape.

After putting the grip tape, you should then put solvent on the inside of your golf grip. Make sure to put enough solvent, or might find your golf shaft flying away when you make your golf swing. Remember that you need perfect concentration and presence of mind when you attach the grip to the shaft.

Upon contact between the solvent and the tape, you’ll only have around a handful of seconds to attach the grip completely and make sure it’s properly aligned. It would really help if you had a vise to hold your golf shaft with while attaching your golf grip. But it’s also possible to complete the process without the use of a vise.

After you have properly attached the golf grip to your golf shaft, you should leave the club to dry overnight before you begin using it. Then, you can just repeat the process for the rest of your clubs. It will take you a bit of work, but it will also save you a lot of money. Make sure to buy good golf grip tape before doing repair work on your clubs, even if they're of high quality like Lamkin golf grips.
